Nevada Teacher Testing Requirements

Prior to Hire

Praxis Core Testing

Apart from the required components within iteachNEVADA (coursework and residency) every future teacher must pass specific exams to demonstrate to schools and the state competency. These exams, called Praxis exams, are administered by the Education Testing Services (ETS.org).

If you take a Praxis in the state of Nevada your scores are automatically sent to the Nevada Department of Education. However, you will need to either email or upload your scores to iteachNEVADA so that our office has record of your passing results.

Praxis Core

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators – This is a series of three tests covering Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. The Praxis Core tests replaced the Praxis I/Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) series of tests previously administered by ETS. You cannot combine passing test scores from the two series; if you have not previously passed all three parts of the PPST, you will need to take and pass all three of the Core Academic Skills for Educators tests in order to be licensed in Nevada. There are currently two (2) versions of the Praxis Core tests for reading, writing, and math.

    • The previous Praxis Core test numbers are: 5712 (reading), 5722 (writing), and 5732 (math) and the NDE will continue to accept these test scores.
    • The newer Praxis Core test numbers are: 5713 (reading), 5723 (writing), and 5733 (math).
    • The only difference in testing is that the new math test has been revised to remove geometry.
    • The NDE will accept passing test scores for all 3 of the new, all 3 of the previous, or a combination of both.

Unlike the Praxis II for specific subjects, the Praxis Core must be passed prior to earning the ARL Certificate.

Praxis Core Exemptions

There are several ways in which to waive the requirement for Praxis Core. The following is an exhaustive list:

  • Passed PPST – Prior to the approval of the Praxis Core, the Praxis PPST was the approved exam for basic skills. If you have passed this exam in the past 5 years, we can use the results.
  • Passed CBEST – The CBEST exam is the California equivalent of the Praxis Core. We can accept passing scores of this exam. To find out more, please click here for test dates and locations.
  • Received a master’s or more advanced degree from a regionally accredited college or university and completed within five (5) years immediately preceding the date on which their application was submitted the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) prepared and administered by ETS or its equivalent and received a score which was at or above midpoint of the score range in effect at the time of examination.

NOTE: The five-year timeline is from the date you apply for your Standard License. Please keep track of your testing date as it might be within the time period now, but might not be at the time of licensure application.

Elementary Program

If pursuing initial certification in Elementary, you are not required to have the Praxis exam passed before you are provided a Conditional License. Rather, you are required to have the test, below, passed prior to being eligible for your Standard License.
