Louisiana Teacher Certification Testing
Apart from the required components within iteachLOUISIANA (coursework and residency) every future teacher must pass specific Louisiana teacher certification tests to demonstrate to schools and the state competency. These exams, called Praxis exams, are administered by the Education Testing Services (ETS.org). The process to compete Louisiana teacher certification testing can be confusing. Hopefully this page helps!
When registering for your exam, you can select iteachLOUISIANA to be a recipient of your scores by using our school code: 6255. You can also either email or upload your scores to your iteach portal so that our office has record of your passing results.
Every applicant is required to have passed both Praxis CORE and Praxis II Subject to be eligible to enroll in the program.
The Praxis Core exam is a Louisiana teacher certification test that measures basic skills for educators. This exam has three components: Reading, Writing and Math. Each exam must be passed independently. Even though there is three separate exams for each section, you can register for all three via the combined exam, test #5751. More information can be found below:
|Praxis Core Exam Section||Test Code||Passing Score|
|Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading||5712||156|
|Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing||5722||162|
|Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics||5732||150|
Praxis Core Exemptions
There are several ways in which to waive the requirement for Praxis Core. The following is an exhaustive list:
- Passed Praxis I PPST – Prior to the approval of the Praxis Core, the Praxis PPST was the approved exam for basic skills.
- Master’s Degree – Hold a master’s degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited college or university.
- SAT Score 1030 (or greater) on Reading and Math sections
- ACT Score of 22 or greater
Praxis II – Subject
The Praxis II is required to be passed in order to enroll in the program. You can apply and start the application process before it is passed, but it must be passed in order to formally enroll. Below is a complete list of certification areas that we are approved to offer certification. Clicking on the test name will take you immediately to study information regarding the exam.
If you passed an older Praxis II exam which was approved at the time you took it, we can accept those scores.
|High School Grade Levels||Test Code||Passing Score|
|6-12 General Science||5435||156|

No Approved Praxis Exam Subject Areas
There are eight content areas in which the state of Louisiana’s Department of Education has not approved a Praxis exam to demonstrate subject matter knowledge. Rather, in these eight areas you must have 31 hours of college coursework correlating to the subject area. These areas are:
- 6-12 Computer Science
- 6-12 Earth Science
- 6-12 Environmental Science
- 6-12 Italian
- 6-12 Journalism
- 6-12 Latin
- 6-12 Marketing
- K-12 Dance
For details regarding what college coursework would be acceptable for these areas, please click here.
Praxis – Principles of Learning and Teaching
At this point you have passed (or been exempt from) Praxis Core and you have passed Praxis Subject exam. While teaching there is a final exam you must pass to earn your Level 1 Professional Certificate: Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT). Depending on the grade level in which you are teaching, you will take one of the following PLT exams.
|Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching||Test Code||Passing Score|
|PLT: Early Childhood (PK-3)||5621||157|
|PLT: Grades K-6||5622||160|
|PLT: Grades 5-9||5623||160|
|PLT: Grades 7-12||5624||157|
Please note that there is some overlap between Early Childhood PLT and Elementary PLT. Though there is one Praxis II (5018/5001) for both areas, depending on the subject you are teaching, you will take either Early Childhood or Elementary PLT exam.
If you are seeking certification in a foreign language (Chinese, French, German or Spanish) you will NOT take the PLT. You will take the World Languages Pedagogy (#5841) instead.
Praxis Teaching Reading
Every individual pursuing certification in either Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education is required to demonstrate competency in Teaching Reading. This can be complete one of two ways:
- Nine (9) hours of Reading completed at a regionally accredited college or university, or
- Pass Praxis Teaching Reading (Test #5204)
With the ability to complete this requirement via college hours, the Praxis Teaching Reading is not a required exam, though most teachers do need to take this exam.
