Texas Instruments Awards Garland ISD Teacher $10,000 STEM Award

We are so delighted when we receive letters from our students that talk about their successes in the classroom. As educators, we want to help passionate people find their place in the classroom, and fulfill their goals of impacting the world around them.

The letter below from Gwen is a great testimonial to her hard work. We were just a small step on her journey to success as a teacher. Great work Gwen!

Gwen Thomas Teacher Receiving Grant from Texas Instruments

Letter to iteach from Gwen…

Hi All – I wanted to share some exciting news.  I completed my teaching certification through iteach in 2019 and was hired to teach 7th grade science at Jackson Technology Center for Math and Science in Garland ISD.  Ms. Brown was my iteach mentor.

Yesterday, I was awarded the 2021 Texas Instruments Innovation in STEM Teaching Award.  I wanted to share a couple pics from the presentation yesterday in my classroom. Apparently I will be attending a formal GISD Board meeting where they will present it to me formally. I was so surprised as I figured it was a long shot as Jackson has won the award twice in the past and I am over the moon with excitement, already dreaming up all the wonderful things I can do in the classroom with the award.

I am so appreciative of all iteach did to prepare me for teaching, the instructors of each of my classes for developing great programs and pushing us to really think about the complex issues they were teaching, and especially the advice and support from my mentor Ms. Brown.

I just wanted to share my happy news.

All the best,

Gwen

Teachers “Enhancing Student Achievement”

According to the Garland ISD Foundation website, teachers get $5000 for themselves of the $10,000 awarded, and the other $5000 goes to STEM supplies for the classroom.

“The goal of the Texas Instruments Foundation Innovations in STEM Teaching Awards is to honor three secondary teachers who are enhancing student achievement and increasing interest in STEM areas.”

“The award includes a $10,000 cash prize for each recipient, of which $5,000 is designated for the individual winning teacher. The remaining $5,000 is to be used for STEM related professional development, technology and/or classroom materials on the teacher’s campus.”
